Credit Repair Companies vs. Doing It Yourself: What's the Difference?

The dirty secret of the credit repair industry: there's nothing they can do that you can't do for free. The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the right to dispute any inaccuracy on your credit report directly with the bureaus.
So why do credit repair companies still exist? Two reasons: time and complexity.
If you have one or two errors on your report, doing it yourself is the obvious choice. Pull your free reports at AnnualCreditReport.com, identify the inaccuracies, and file disputes online with each bureau. Most resolve in 30–45 days.
If you have a complex situation — multiple collections, identity theft, or 8+ negative items — a reputable credit repair company (Lexington Law, Credit Saint) becomes worth considering. They have systems for tracking dozens of disputes simultaneously and the legal know-how to escalate.
Avoid any company that: guarantees a specific score increase, asks for full payment up front, or tells you to dispute accurate information. Both are illegal under CROA.
